  Paul Anka, born in Ottawa in 1941, began his show business career at the age of 12. His first (unsuccessful) record was made early in 1957, but it was not before a visit to New York City later that year when he was signed to ABC Records who put him under the guidance of Don Costa. Their first record together "Diana" became a worldwide smash. The rest, as they say, is history. Today Paul is a very successful business man. He helped with advise when this CD was compiled.   Bill BUCHANAN und Dickie GOODMAN entwickelten in den 50er Jahren das Konzept von Orson Welles' Hörspiel "War Of The Worlds" weiter, indem sie Radiosendungen mit Nachrichten über die Landung Ausserirdischer unterbrachen, das sogenannte "Break-In"-Prinzip. Diese Unterbrechungen waren jedoch Zeilen, die aus populären Rock'n'Roll-Hits jener Zeit herausgeschnitten waren. Die 24 Titel dieser CD bestehen aus allen Hits von BUCHANAN & GOODMAN, Buchanan & Ancell's "Frankenstein" sowie einigen Kompositionen von Goodman, die durch andere Künstler bekannt wurden. Die Titel sind erstmalig komplett und in guter Qualität auf CD erhältlich. Der Text des beigefügten Booklets ist leider voller inhaltlicher und sachlicher Fehler.

  In the mid-1950s Bill BUCHANAN and Dickie GOODMAN picked up the basic idea of Orson Welles' "War Of The Worlds", when a radio show was interrupted by reports of an extra-terrestrial landing in New Jersey. In this case the interruptions, however, were original lines edited out of popular rock'n'roll hits, a technique known as the "break-in". That idea resulted in a string of hits. This 24 tracks CD contains all of BUCHANAN & GOODMAN's hits, Buchanan & Ancell's "Frankenstein" and a couple of hit songs Dickie wrote for other people. For the first time most of these tracks are available on CD in a good quality. Unfortunately the text of the booklet is poorly researched and full of mistakes.

They were the first r'n'b group to introduce the extensive use of choreography into their stage routine which contributed significantly to their popularity.   Die 21 Titel dieser CD wurden zwischen 1969 und 1981 aufgenommen. Insgesamt konnten THE CARPENTERS 28 Hits zwischen Februar 1970 und April 1982 in den Billboard Hot 100 platzieren. Richard Carpenter war der Songwriter und Arrangeur, er spielte Piano, Karen sang und war die Schlagzeugerin und Bassist Wes Jacobs komplettierte das Trio. Auf Tourneen und Aufnahme-Sessions wurde die Gruppe durch wechselnde Musiker aufgestockt. Die Karriere endete, nachdem Karen 1983 nach langer Krankheit starb. Richard hat nie versucht, sie zu ersetzen.

  Recorded between 1969 and 1981 THE CARPENTERS placed a total 28 hits in the Billboard Hot 100 between February of 1970 and April 1982. Richard was the songwriter and arranger and he played the piano, Karen was the singer and played the drums, and bass player Wes Jacobs was the other regular in the trio. The group was completed by various musicians during tours and recording sessions. Karen died after a long illness in 1983 which ended the group's career. Richard never tried to replace her.

"FANTASY GIRLS" is their debut album from 1976, "CHARLIE" their final European album from 1983, containing their hit single "IT'S INEVITABLE" after which the album was renamed in several countries.   Sanford Clark wurde 1935 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, geboren. Einige Jahre später zogen seine Eltern mit ihm nach Phoenix, Arizona.   SANFORD CLARK was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1935. A couple of years later the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. During his military service with the U.S. Air Force he began to publicly sing country and western songs which caused appearances in local radio and tv shows. This led to a contact with record producer and songwriter Lee Hazlewood and a recording contract with Hazlewood's small record label. There he recorded the rockabilly track "The Fool" together with guitarist Al Casey, a lifelong friend. This recording was picked up by Dot Records in 1956 and transformed into a big nationwide hit. After several rock'n'roll and rockabilly recordings that became just minor hits over the next six years Sanford returned to his roots in country music where he enjoyed several hits over the next decades.   Eddie was born in Minnesota in 1938. In 1953 he moved to Los Angeles where he met Hank Cochran (no relation). Both being excellent vocalists and guitarists they became The Cochran Brothers. They started playing country music in 1954. In 1956 Eddie tried his luck with recording a couple of rock'n'roll tracks on his own, one of which, "Sittin' In The Balcony", hit the U.S. Top 20. This success not only led to a contract with Liberty Records (and subsequently a string of hits) but also to parts in movies like "The Girl Can't Halp it" and "Untamed Youth". Eddie died in a car accident in the U.K. in 1960. In additon to a number of never before issued interviews this CD contains 6 rare vocals by Eddie, 2 by Hank and 10 by The Cochran Brothers. Eddie Cochran left his mark on popular music history between 1956 and 1963. There are 8 top 100 hits listed in the U.S. 1956 to 1959, but 12 in the U.K. 1968 to1963, which sheds a light on his popularity in Europe. In addition his acting career was just taking off when he passed away. The CD "Eddie Cochran Rocks" contains 35 tracks recorded from 1956 onwards. There are many alternative cuts of his hit recordings and a few unreleased songs.

  They were one of the most successful doo-wop / pop rock outfits in history. They were founded out of the remains of THE ROBINS in Los Angeles in 1955. Between 1956 and 1972 they scored 20 top 100 chart hits and 10 in the r'n'b charts. Their incredible popularity was basically the result of the unequalled talent of their songwriter team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and their ability to combine doo wop with very original humor.   Born in Chicago, Ill., in 1931 as one of 8 kids, Sam began singing gospel music at age 6 and became a permanent member of a well-known gospel choir age 9. He expanded his musical horizon becoming lead singer with the Soul Stirrers in 1950. In the mid-50s he began to sing r'n'b and blues under the pseudonym Dale Cook. Producer Bumps Blackwell convinced him to record a couple of pop/soul songs in 1957, the first one of those, "I'll Come Running Back To You", still as Dale Cook, became a hit record.   JOHNNY CYMBAL, emigrated from Scotland to Cleveland, OH, at an early age, became well known with his world-wide hit recording "Mr. Bass Man" in 1962/1963. The formula based on the successful doo-wop tradition with the dominant bass line just uttering one-syllable-sounds like "boom boom", "dah dah" or something like that. In this case Cadillacs/Coasters vocalist Ronnie Bright was responsible for it, a hit recipe Ronnie had also used on Barry Mann's "Who Put The Bomp?" one year earlier. Johnny gave us two more chart hits under his own name and further two as DEREK in 1968/1969.

After that Dave Dee left the group, a step that turned out to kill the outfit's string of international success.   THE DELL-VIKINGS gründeten sich 1955 auf einer U.S. Air Force Basis in Pittsburgh, PA.   THE DELL-VIKINGS were founded at a Pittsburgh USAF base in 1955. They were Clarence Quick, Cory "Chuck" Jackson, Gus Backus, Kripps Johnson, Norman Wright, and David Lerchey. They became the first successful mixed-race rock'n'roll/doo wop outfit. After several hit recordings with Luniverse and Dot Records the group split up to become THE DELL-VIKINGS and THE DEL VIKINGS respectively. Both of them remained successful with hit records for Dot and Mercury. In 1959 both groups disbanded when their lead vocalists left: Gus Backus went to Germany to become a singing and a movie star there, and Chuck Jackson pursued a big r'n'b solo career.

  The (Social) Deviants begannen 1967 in der Londoner Underground Szene. Mick Farren und Drummer Russ Hunter bauten die Band mehrfach um, und nachdem Duncan Sanderson (Bass) und Paul Rudolph (Gitarre) sich angeschlossen hatten, stellte sich mit dem zweiten Album "Disposable" auch endlich der Erfolg ein. 1968, nach Krach während einer U.S.-Tournee, ließen Hunter, Sanderson und Rudolph den Kollegen Farren sitzen und gründeten the Pink Fairies.

  The (Social) Deviants were originally a community band in London's underground in 1967. Mick Farren and drummer Russ Hunter took their time to find a suitable line-up, and it was not before Duncan Sanderson (bass) and Paul Rudolph (guitar) had joined, that success followed with the release of their second album "Disposable". During a vast American tour in 1968 Hunter, Sanderson and Rudolph left Farren and formed the Pink Fairies.

  DICKIE GOODMAN gelangte zusammen mit BILL BUCHANAN als Buchanan & Goodman Mitte der 50er Jahre zu Ruhm mit ihren Break-In-Aufnahmen wie der "Flying Saucers"-Serie und anderen. Ähnlich der berühmten Radiosendung von Orson Welles "War Of The Worlds" wird dabei - allerdings auf humorvolle Weise und mit Hilfe von Ausschnitten aus aktuellen Hits jener Tage - von der Landung Ausserirdischer berichtet. Das Konzept hielt sich viele Jahre erfolgreich. Diese Aufnahmen erscheinen erstmals in akzeptabler Qualität auf CD. Der Titel ist irreführend, dieses ist nicht "Novelty" sondern "Break-In", Auch war Dickie Goodman an mehreren der enthaltenen Titel gar nicht beteiligt, sondern das sind Aufnahmen, die Bill Buchanan mit anderen Künstlern gemacht hat, aber umso interessanter ist diese Zusammenstellung für den Sammler.

  DICKIE GOODMAN originally recorded together with BILL BUCHANAN as Buchanan & Goodman beginning in the mid-1950s. Their long line of hits started with the legendary "Flying Saucers" series which is based on the idea of Orson Welles' radio show "War Of The Worlds" which is originally based on H.G. Wells' novel, reporting the landing of extra-terrestrials with interviews taken from excerpts out of hits of the period. The concept remained successful for quite a couple of years. This compilation is excellent, but it has a couple of faults: first of all, this is not "novelty" but "break-in" - Mr. Goodman recorded novelty later during the 1960s and 1970s -, secondly Goodman has nothing to do whatsoever with several tracks on this album which were recorded by BILL BUCHANAN together with other artists, which on the other hand is an extra bonus for the collector.

  DARYL HALL (born in Philadelphia 1948) and JOHN OATES (born in New York City 1949) met when students at Temple University in 1967. Hall had been an experienced background singer on many top soul recordings, and they began recording as a duo in 1972 to so much success that they became second male duo act of all time only to be surpassed by the Everly Brothers. They can look back to about 40 top 100 hits during the 1970s and 1980s.

  BOBBY HEBB wurde 1941 in Nashville, TN, geboren. Mit 12 Jahren war er der erste farbige Musiker, der in der Grand Old Opry Show auftrat. Mitte der 50er zog er nach Chicago. In 1959 he switched to MGM and to Mercury in 1960. There his string of hits continued with "Lover Please" becoming his biggest success in 1962. Clyde passed away in June 1972.

  THE MERSEYS were the remains of what was once British beat/soft rock group The Merseybeats. This Liverpudlian outfit scored a number of hits 1963 to 1966 before several changes in the line-up totally messed up their musical conception. Therefore Tony Crane and Bill Kinsley decided to try their luck as a duo. However, after just one huge hit with "Sorrow" (1966) the fairy tale was over.   BRIAN POOLE gründete die Gruppe 1959 in Dagenham, Essex.   Brian Poole created the group in Dagenham, Essex, in 1959. They were regulars on one of Britain's most popular radio shows of the time, "Saturday Club", playing preferably other people's hits. That became even more successful with the arrival of the beat boom. Their cover version of the Beatles' EP cut "Twist And Shout" became a surprise top 10 hit in 1963.   Saxophonist Wilbert "Red" Prysock stammte aus North Carolina. Seine Karriere begann als Soldat der U.S.-Armee in Deutschland in den frühen 50er Jahren, als er mit seinem fetzigen Saxophonspiel den Boogie, den Blues und nicht zuletzt den Rock'n'Roll populär machte - lange bevor man hier von Bill Haley oder gar Elvis Presley gehört hatte.   Saxophone player Wilbert "Red" Prysock, brother of legendary r'n'b balladeer Arthur Prysock, came from North Carolina. He started his musical career as a G.I. in Germany where he remained more popular throughout his life than anywhere else. Back Stateside he joined several bands in NYC until he founded his own outfit in 1953 to play his rocking style of boogie, blues and of course rock'n'roll. He never hit the U.S. Top 100, but in Europe he became an icon of rock'n'roll.

  QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE war eine der erfolgreichsten Live-Bands der Hippie- und Drogen-Szene in San Francisco in der zweiten Hälfte der 60er Jahre. Ihre Studio-Alben waren kümmerlich, aber immer, wenn sie Live-Alben einspielten, kam Großartiges heraus. Nach zahlreichen Umbesetzungen löste sich die Gruppe 1972 auf. Gitarrist Gary Duncan holte in den 90ern noch ein paar Mal verschiedene Gruppenmitglieder zusammen für ein paar Auftritte als QUICKSILVER. Bei einem dieser Auftritte entstand dieses tolle Album.

  QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE was one of the most successful live acts in San Francisco during the flower power and drug age of the latter half of the 1960s. Their studio albums were lacking everything the group stood for, but whenever they released an album of live recordings, something great resulted. After many changes in the line-up the group disbanded in 1972. Guitarist Gary Duncan called several former members in for a couple of concerts in the 1990s, recording those as QUICKSILVER. And voila: the great live atmosphere is still there.

Auch später tourte er immer wieder mit den Shadows und nahm auch ab und zu mit ihnen neue Songs auf. Diese Doppel-CD enthält 60 rockige Hits aus den ersten 10 Jahren ihrer Karriere.

  Born in India in 1940, Cliff's parents returned to the U.K. in 1948. Like all British rockers of the 1950s he fell in love with skiffle. A big part of his early success came courtesy of his band The Shadows (they started as The Drifters in 1958, but there were complications). Between 1958 and 1966 they recorded about 50 charted hits together. In the mid-60s Cliff began to record solo, but he still toured with the Shadows and occasionally recorded with them.   KENNY ROGERS, geboren 1938 in Houston, Tx, verstorben 2020, begann seine Folk-/Popmusikkarriere in den 60ern bei den New Christie Minstrels. They became one of the most renowned live bands of the time, although their records, especially the 45 releases proved considerably less successful.
